Though strict, these laws were lenient by Nazi standards and they were generally not enforced. In addition, the Hungarian government actively resisted German pressure to further persecute and to deport its Jewish population. For most Jews in Hungarian territory, including Sol and his family, life went on almost as usual until 1943. At that point, to appease the German government, the Hungarian government began strictly enforcing the existing anti-Jewish laws. Deportations did not begin until the Germans occupied Hungary in March 1944.
